The Bereavement Journey
In April 2026, we were pleased to run The Bereavement Journey, a seven-week course held in the Canterbury Room at St Thomas’ Church. We had a very good response and welcomed a lovely group of people who came with a variety of experiences of loss and bereavement.
Each session included watching a number of short films, followed by time for discussion and reflection. The films helped to guide conversations around the participants’ own experiences of loss and provided a helpful starting point for sharing thoughts and feelings within the group.
Over the seven weeks, we explored many aspects of grief, including the impact and pain of bereavement, anger and guilt, coping with the reactions of others, adjusting to change, delayed and suppressed grief, and ways of moving forward healthily. Our final session focused on faith and loss, giving an opportunity to consider some of the spiritual questions that can arise through bereavement.
The group were wonderful and, as the weeks progressed, became enormously supportive and understanding of one another. One reflection from the course was that it would have been beneficial to have a little more time for participants simply to talk and share with each other, allowing those relationships and the sense of mutual support to develop even further.
It was a privilege to spend these seven weeks together. Those who attended expressed how grateful they were that a course such as The Bereavement Journey had been made accessible to them locally, providing a safe and supportive space in which they could talk openly about their loss and know that they were not alone in their experience of grief.
We are very grateful to everyone who took part and contributed so openly and generously, making The Bereavement Journey such a worthwhile and meaningful experience.
