Welcome to our newsletter which covers 2 weeks
SeaGull

May we be refreshed in worship and in body mind and spirit, wherever we are.
Aware of the beauty of God’s love in Jesus and in creation may we notice, be still, delight and respond.
The Collect, the prayer for the week
Sunday 13th August
Let your merciful ears, O Lord,
be open to the prayers of your humble servants;
and that they may obtain their petitions
make them to ask such things as shall please you;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Sunday 20th August
O God, you declare your almighty power
most chiefly in showing mercy and pity:
mercifully grant to us such a measure of your grace,
that we, running the way of your commandments,
may receive your gracious promises,
and be made partakers of your heavenly treasure;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Tea & home-made cakes outside St Mary’s
Bank Holiday Monday, 28th August, 2-5pm
Put the date in your diary and come along to join us!
This annual event is a lovely opportunity for people to get together and we often have several visitors to the Gap, and Thames Path walkers dropping in for a cuppa. Janet plays the piano in the church during the afternoon and people can go in to listen as and when they wish.
We need helpers to serve the tea and cakes. The more we have, the less time each person has to do – so please do get in touch with Sara via the Benefice Office  or speak to John, the Church Warden, if you can spare an hour that afternoon.
And of course – we would be delighted if people could make a cake, sandwiches or buns; home-made items are always delicious and really do make it special.
Thank you! All proceeds will go to St Mary’s.

Also Open Gardens and Flowers in church at South Stoke on Monday 28th from 1pm. There will be tours of the bell tower during the afternoon.
A postcard from our curate, Jo, and her family in Kenya
Thank you for all your prayers, we are having lots of fun. Luke is working hard travelling along bumpy roads to visit rural eye clinics. It was wonderful to see Andrew's eye examination app being used in its context, and to meet such welcoming people.
I have had many conversations about God and Church with the Christians here. It’s been eye opening to discover that church has some of the same issues we do, falling attendance and a Sunday-centric program, but wonderful to connect with our Kenyan brothers and sisters.
Our favourite place to stay was called Mali Saba. It was on the edge of a collapsed shield volcano and we could see the steam from the active lava lake rise through cracks in the forest floor.  But more importantly the hotel was supporting local young adult orphans through training and providing jobs. The food was incredible and the people were beautiful. Thanks to Andrew and Madeleine for the recommendation!
We have been enjoying swimming pools, safaris and hunting for creatures in the coral reef. Two weeks left on the glorious coast with Luke joining us for the last week for some well deserved rest.
I’m looking forward to seeing you all when we get back. Please pray for the kids as they keep adjusting to a different culture, for Luke as he works on his research here and for our Kenyan brothers and sisters.
With much love,
Jo

Prayers for this week

Thank you to Alun for this week’s prayers.

Blessed are you, eternal God, to be praised and glorified for ever. We pray for your holy catholic Church. Father, may your Holy Spirit kindle in all our hearts a greater love for Christ and his Church. Make us alive to the opportunities of service which are ours in today’s world. Save us from complacency and fear of things new; inspire us with a vision of a world won for you, and stir us to pray and work, and to give, until your will is done on earth. We ask that you give us grace to break down any barriers which may be keeping sections of your Church apart that, accepting our differences, we may grow in love for one another. Strengthen all who minister in Christ’s name, granting them courage to proclaim your gospel.
Lord, hear us.

We pray that you inspire and lead those who hold authority in the nations of the world. Give them wisdom to know your will, regard for your laws, and respect for human rights, that they may seek to lead mankind in the pursuit of truth, freedom and peace. We pray for the countries where there is unrest and conflict, alas many, for victims affected physically or mentally, for families torn apart, and for governments and agencies working to alleviate their distress.
Lord, hear us.

Make us alive to the needs of our community; help us to share each other’s joys and burdens. Look with kindness on our homes and families and grant that your love may grow in our hearts. During this holiday period we pray that parents and children together may be learners in the school of Christ, daily increasing in mutual respect and understanding, in tolerance and patience, and in all-prevailing love. May it be a time for appreciating the values of family life.
Lord, hear us.

Deepen our compassion for all who suffer from sickness, grief or trouble at this time, especially those whom we know personally. We ask your blessing on all involved in nursing or caring occupations, tending to the needs of the unwell, the depressed, the lonely, the handicapped. In your presence may they find their strength.
Lord, hear us.

We remember those who have died recently and give thanks for their lives. We pray for their families and friends mourning their loss. In the midst of their sorrow give them the comfort of your presence, and the courage and faith they need to face the days ahead. Into your hands we commend them and praise you for all your saints.
Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
