The Collects, the prayers for the week.
Collect for 17th August
Almighty God,
who sent your Holy Spirit
to be the life and light of your Church:
open our hearts to the riches of your grace,
that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit
in love and joy and peace;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Collect for 24th August
Let your merciful ears, O Lord,
be open to the prayers of your humble servants;
and that they may obtain their petitions
make them to ask such things as shall please you;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.

Our Bereavement Café has its next session this Sunday, August 17th, at 3pm in the Canterbury Room.
Heal the Gap colour
The aims of this group are to demystify the topic of grief and remove its status as a taboo subject and to equip everyone with the self-assurance necessary to engage in a meaningful conversation with those grappling with loss, focusing primarily on active listening.
The sessions are managed by trained group bereavement facilitators. The group is open to anyone, regardless of how long ago your loss occurred, and you will be welcome whether or not you have been before.
We hope to offer some friendship, advice and hope as well as tea, coffee and refreshments. We look forward to seeing you there.            Melissa

Adult baptism/confirmation preparation course.
Have you stood up and been counted as a member of God’s family? Have you got an adult understanding of who Jesus is? What feeds you? We have a 15 year old and a ripe adult and would welcome others to join a group. Timing will depend on what people can do but will probably be in the evenings in September. Do speak to a member of the ministry team about this if you are interested.

August Bank Holiday Teas at St Mary's
As usual, St Mary's will be serving teas outside the Church on 25th August from 2pm until 5pm.
Glynne Stackhouse has kindly agreed to play a selection of light music from shows on the piano for us inside the Church from 2:30pm-4pm.
If you are able to help serve tea for an hour, and/or to make cakes, please let John know via the church office (officeofgsandss@yahoo.com) as he is acting as co-ordinator.
South Stoke’s annual "Open Gardens" event will also take place on 25th August from 1pm to 5pm (last ticket sales at 3:30pm). There will be tea and cake in the village hall and tours of the bell tower will take place during the afternoon.

Live in harmony, join together in songs of praise the Bible urges us. So we can look forward to doing as we are told, for once!

Music treble clef and notes

Our Benefice Songs of Praise on Sunday 31st August at 10.30am is in St Andrew’s. The organist and choirs from Streatley and Goring will be there to help raise the roof.

What is your favourite hymn/song and why?
We would love to hear your requests and reasons. Please feed into Liz, Mike, Ben or to the office (875651 or officeofgsandss@yahoo.com) by Monday 18th August please so we can shape the service. Thank you.

Marriage of Emily and Matt
On Saturday 9th August, a very special wedding took place at St Thomas' church between our organist, Matt, and Emily. Unsurprisingly, the service was filled with beautiful music, sung by a choir of 50+ people and expertly accompanied on organ and piano by Matt's two brothers.

Over the last two years, we have been blessed with Matt's musical skills, energy and enthusiasm and Emily's beautiful soprano voice helping lead our worship.  We felt honoured that they had chosen to hold their wedding at St Thomas' and enjoyed meeting their family and friends as the wedding celebrations continued in Rectory Gardens and the Village Hall after the service.  Matt and Emily are now on honeymoon but have sent the following message:

"Greetings all from Norfolk! Emily and I were hoping to have the time to compose something properly and jointly to send out before we left for honeymoon, but our Sunday ended up being rather hectic. We have arrived in Norfolk and have safely moored our boat for the night. I'm standing on the bridge near Ludham trying to maintain a bar of mobile reception to write a quick word of thanks to send your way.

This being said, in a way, it doesn't matter that this message is short and not brilliantly composed, because I am not entirely sure I can quite put our feelings from the last few days into words. Our wedding was absolutely perfect. We couldn't have asked for anything more personal, special, or brilliant, and it only happened because everyone involved went far beyond what we could reasonably ask for or expect. It's quite clear we are cared about by the community in Goring. The service and celebrations were just utterly perfect, and we are still riding the high.

Thank you all so very much for your gifts. People have been so thoughtful and generous that we haven't actually managed to get through everything before leaving, and still have some things to open when we return! But the greatest gift was truly achieving what, in our eyes at least, was the most perfect service and celebrations imaginable.

We cannot thank you enough, and we both look forward to serving the church and community for years to come.
Our very best wishes and love,
Mr and Mrs Foster!"
Living, working and ministering with those with whom we disagree!
In the coming year it is likely that each PCC will need to decide if it will allow its church to be a place where prayers can be said publicly for committed same sex couples.
The link here takes you to information about this from the Church of England. We ran the LLF five session video based course in the benefice in Autumn 2021, shortly after the course materials were produced. The course can be accessed from the LLF learning hub here and includes a number of short ‘story films’ which you may find helpful in understanding some of the different positions people are coming from in their personal lives.

Prayers for the week
Thank you to Alun for this week’s prayers.

Father, we thank you that you call us to your service as members of the Body of Christ. We ask your blessing on those who share in the life and work of the churches of this benefice:

  • In the ministry of word and sacrament
  • In teaching and pastoral care
  • In service to the community and those in need
  • In ecumenical fellowship and co-operation

We pray for all the members of the three congregations, that using their varied gifts they may find their true vocation and advance your kingdom, bearing witness to your love as shown in your Son, Jesus Christ.
Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

Lord, we bring before you the deep divisions of the world. We think especially of the people of Ukraine, Israel and Palestine, Syria, and other countries where conflict continues to rage. Set in the hearts of their leaders the spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation, that they may no longer distrust or fear one another, but be drawn together in understanding. Then with unity of purpose they may seek the way of peace. Bless the work of agencies bringing humanitarian aid and succour to those in greatest need. We remember as well missionaries across the world, working on the edge, and pray that more may feel called to follow this challenging but rewarding path. We ask your blessing particularly on Lindsey and Steve Poulson in Honduras, and the example they set for the young people they mentor.
Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

Lord, we thank you for the beauty of earth, sea and sky, for the richness of mountains and rivers, for the songs of birds and the precious loveliness of flowers. These are gifts to be treasured; may we strive hard to safeguard them for posterity. Grant that we continue to grow in grateful enjoyment of your creation, whilst always remaining aware of our responsibilities as stewards.
Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

Father, we thank you for our homes and families, for the love, care and mutual protection they provide, and the blessings which we often take for granted. Make us mindful of those who are less fortunate – the lonely, the homeless, the unemployed, the depressed, the confused and the vulnerable. We commend to you the work of those who strive, sometimes unheralded, to minister to their need.
Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

We pray for those who care for the sick, in hospital, nursing home or the patient’s own home. Grant to doctors and nurses the skill, understanding and compassion required, and to carers the strength and perseverance to look after their charges sympathetically. We remember those who have died recently. Grant, O Lord, to the bereaved the strength and courage to face the days ahead and the joyful expectation of eternal life with those they love.
Lord, hear us, Lord, graciously hear us.

Merciful Father, accept these prayers for the sake of your son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
