Sunday 18th May                                                                          Easter 5

Welcome to our weekly newsletter
Bluebells IM
Alleluia, Christ is risen……
He is risen indeed, Alleluia!
What is God saying to the church?
God tells a stunned Peter in Acts “What God has made clean you must not call profane”. Seismic shifts have changed insights before. What do we need to understand today?
The Collect, the prayer for the week
   Risen Christ,
your wounds declare your love for the world
and the wonder of your risen life:
   give us compassion and courage
to risk ourselves for those we serve,
to the glory of God the Father.

Christian Aid 80 years
Thank you to everyone who delivered and to all who gave, and for the wonderful lunch at Oriel House.
Can you help with the last few roads for delivering in Goring, please?

Continue to encourage people to take their donations to Westholme Stores or Inspiration until Saturday 24th May.
Common Cup Chalice
Jesus embodied God’s love for us, becoming human flesh. He gave himself for us, on the cross and rising again for us and for all creation.
We are invited to encounter him, and to know and receive his presence, his very self, in Holy Communion.
Chalice & plate
We share in this in the meal which remembers, takes, gives thanks and consecrates bread and wine to be Jesus - his body and blood with us.
This sacrament, this outward sign, with inner meaning, is a gift, mystery and reality, is present in both or either of the bread or the wine.  The bread is sufficient, and is all our Roman Catholic brethren receive.
South Stoke have chosen to return to the Common cup. This may be discussed at forthcoming APCM meetings. There are some strong views in all directions (as ever!) on this subject among our members. My proposal is a compromise. During the summer months when we are physically less surrounded or less threatened by flu etc. that we return to sharing the common cup at Streatley and Goring as well. We will have chalice assistants where possible.
It is easy to take Communion too lightly and we can forget the power of the symbolism of being one, sharing in the given-ness of God. But equally I am aware of not wanting to seem to exclude any who are worried of infections.
Where we do have the common cup I ask please that nobody tries to intinct – dip their wafer. This is understood to be the greatest cause of infection spreading. Please simply receive Christ with you in the bread alone and decline the wine during this summer season if you are not comfortable receiving the chalice.  During the winter I ask those who would like to receive the common cup to be content with an intincted wafer.
Please do raise with me any concerns this causes you. Thank you.            Ben

Heal the Gap Bereavement Café
Our Bereavement Cafe has its next session this Sunday, May 18th, at 3pm in the Canterbury Room.
Heal the Gap colour
The aims of this group are to demystify the topic of grief and remove its status as a taboo subject and to equip everyone with the self-assurance necessary to engage in a meaningful conversation with those grappling with loss, focusing primarily on active listening.
The sessions are managed by trained group bereavement facilitators. The group is open to anyone, regardless of how long ago your loss occurred, and you will be welcome whether or not you have been before.
We hope to offer some friendship, advice and hope as well as tea, coffee and refreshments. We look forward to seeing you there.                                   Melissa

Prayers for the week
Thank you to Mike for this week’s prayers based on David Adam’s ‘Glimpses of Glory’.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Father, give us wisdom and faith to trust in you. When we cannot see your presence, when the way is full of darkness and doubt, increase our faith and help to know that you will never leave us or forsake us, for you are ever with us, Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with the Father and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory, now and forever, Amen.

Lord, we rejoice that we abide in you and in your great love. We pray that you will strengthen the fellowship of your people, that you will sustain us in our unity and help us to know we are one with you. We pray for inter-church relationships and all groups that help to break down barriers. And we pray that Pope Leo will help to bring forward our togetherness.
Lord, lead us from despair to hope,
from division to wholeness.

Lord, we bring before you areas where there is division, strife and racial hatred – for the crises in the Holy Land and Ukraine, the renewed clash between India and Pakistan, and conflict throughout the world. We pray for strengthening of the United Nations and for all who work for peace and unity and for the building up of community and fellowship.
Lord, lead us from despair to hope,
from division to wholeness.

We give thanks for our own homes and their love. We pray for homes of strife and discord, homes where there is neglect, abuse or violence. We pray for all families suffering from a breakdown in their relationships.
Lord, lead us from despair to hope,
from division to wholeness.

We pray for all who are suffering from physical or mental illness. for those who are torn apart by memories or fears. We ask your blessing on loved ones and friends who are suffering at this time.
Lord, lead us from despair to hope,
from division to wholeness.

We rejoice that you lead us through the valley of the shadow of death and offer us life eternal. We remember all who rejoice in your love and in your kingdom.
Lord, lead us from despair to hope,
from division to wholeness.

Merciful Father
accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.
